From the moment Man learned of Essential Oils, the most popular and prescribed oils for calming and healing has been Lavender. Along the way the method of using it evolved to a Bath soak! With the change came additions to the bath that have enhanced this ritual.
Here then is a recipe that is for the rejuvenation of the Body/Mind/Spirit.

1/4 cup Lavender buds

A friend’s recipe

I have reconnected with a childhood friend through Facebook. When we first met, she had just been potty trained and I was maybe 5. She just sent me this wonderful recipe for “fudge” that her mother used to make when she was young. It brings back fond memories for her everytime she eats it. I have been craving fudge, but not really wanting to make it and not finding it in the stores anywhere. I open my email yesterday and find this recipe from her. I love the name!

“When we lived in Arizona while I was in 4th and 5th grades.  My mom was on a health kick, we drank raw milk, ate wheat germ on everything, had only carob in place of chocolate.  I remember her making this recipe.  I just made it over christmas while my dad was here, it tasted just like I remembered!  But since Sophie is so bad with peanuts I'll probably never make it again.”

Super Fudge
1 C honey
1 C chunky peanut butter
1 C sunflower seeds, raw
1/2 C raisins
3/4 C carob powder
1 C sesame seeds
1 C unsweetened coconut

Heat honey and peanut butter, quickly add rest of ingredients which have been mixed together.  Pour into greased 9 x 9 pan and chill.  Cut into pieces.
I kept mine in the fridge. www.avintagemom.blogspot.com/

Those of you that know me, or have read my entire blog, know that I don’t usually plan ahead. There is no going to the store to buy the ingredients for any recipe. I try to keep on hand everything I would need to make almost anything. If I don’t have it, I find a substitute. This recipe was no exception.

I didn’t have carob, so I used cocoa powder, Prudy said she did the same thing. I didn’t have very many sesame seeds so I used Flax seeds. I used chopped almonds for the sunflower seeds, but I had everything else! Yeah!!!J My raisins were golden and they were wonderful inside, they have a little tang that is so yummy.

I didn’t really measure the peanut butter or honey, as I didn’t want to have to clean that measuring cup; so I just used a spoon. It wasn’t as sweet as I would have liked, so I think I needed more honey.

I LOVE it! The coconut, flax seed and almonds are so crunchy and the raisins add a nice sweetness, maybe I should have added more raisins – I didn’t measure those either.
I think this is a great “dump and pour” as well as “clean out the pantry” recipe. You can add as much or little as you like, as long as you have enough honey (or maple, brown rice syrup, agave or whatever sweetener you like) and peanut butter (sunflower butter, almond butter – whatever butter you like – Prudy, use a different “butter.” Sunflower seed butter isn’t even from nuts! J) to hold it together. Use your favorite nuts and dried fruits and seeds, or whatever you have on hand.

It is sweeter if it's out on the counter as opposed to cold in the fridge.
Healthy AND yummy and pretty guilt free!
Enjoy!

Natural Peels and Facial Masks!

Natural Skin Peels and Natural Alpha Hydroxy
Alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) skin care products are easy to make at home because they are made of fruit and other ingredients we may have in the frig or kitchen cupboards.
Fruit acids are great for the skin because they loosen the glue
between dead skin cells, and the cells fall away, leaving the face very
smooth and soft. You’ll be amazed at how easy it is to produce fabulous
results for your skin that you would imagine only the most expensive and
sophisticated products you could buy could do. Not only that, but AHAs are
found in fruit and vegetables you may already have in your kitchen or growing
in your garden, so you don?t need to worry about any synthetic chemicals that
may cause harm. The famed beauty Cleopatra unknowingly used the benefit of
AHAs on her skin when she bathed in milk. Try any of the following fruit
acids, but always take care to avoid your eyes. Avoid using these homemade
peels if your skin is sunburned, and before going into the sun.
Malic acid: Apples, vinegar, applesauce, cider

Lactic acid: Buttermilk, yogurt, powdered skim milk, sour cream,
blackberries, tomatoes

Tartaric Acid: Grapes, grape juice, wine, cream of tartar

Citric Acid: Citrus fruits such as lemons, limes, grapefruit, and orange

Glycolic acid: Sugar cane

All you need is about one half a teaspoon of liquid per face cleansing. You
can freshly squeeze the juice of one lemon, for example, and refrigerate the
leftovers for the rest of the week. Just dab some of the juice onto your
fingers and pat on your face. Leave on for 10 minutes or so before rinsing.
If you are in a rush, just cut a grape or strawberry in half-whatever you
happen to have on hand-and rub it over your skin; let the juice set for a few
minutes, and then rinse.

Practical uses for your Grapefruit Seed Extract

Grapefruit seed extract is a marvelous creation from Mother Nature that is in need of more respect and is an underrated treasure. It cleans us, protects us, preserves our delicate foods, and so much more. Outlined here are some of the greatest uses for grapefruit seed extract and a list of very simple to administer recipes. GSE is also added to all natural, handmade lotions, balms and creams to help preserve and extend their shelf-life.

Facial Cleanser
Thoroughly splash, or moisten face with water (either cool or warm is fine).
With hands still wet apply 1-2 drops of extract to your fingertips and massage into skin using a circular motion. Rinse thoroughly after use and pat dry. You may notice a minor tingling sensation afterwards. This is the deep cleansing properties of the grapefruit seed extract.

Skin Rinse (For very minor skin irritations)
Dilute extract with water (about 1-2 drops per tablespoon). Apply this solution directly to irritated area of the skin twice daily. If additional irritation continues discontinue immediately and seek the advice of your physician.

Nail Treatment
Dilute extract with water or alcohol (1-3 drops per tablespoon).
Apply this solution directly on the surface of the nail along the cuticle and underneath the front of the nail. Or soak nails twice daily for as long as needed

Scalp Treatment
Add 2-3 drops of extract to each shampooing. Massage into scalp and leave on for a minimum of 2 minutes. Rinse of thoroughly and be cautious not to get in eyes.
This may also be used without shampoo.

Toothbrush Cleaner
Stir 2-4 drops of extract into a glass of water. Immerse toothbrush for 15 minutes. Be sure to rinse toothbrush before using. Change water and remix every 2-3 days.

Fruit and Veggie Wash
Add 20 drops per 32oz bottle of water with sprayer pump. Shake thoroughly and spray on any vegetables, meats, fruits, or poultry. Rinse when done.

Cutting Board Cleaner
Apply 5-10 drops of extract to cutting board and work into entire board with a wet sponge or dishcloth. Leave on for at least 30 minutes. Rinse with water before using.

All Purpose Cleaner
Add 15-30 drops of extract to any 32 oz pump sprayer filled with your favorite cleanser or this can be added just to water. Use on all surfaces of the house.

Don't own any GSE? You can easily purchase of a 5 ml bottle for $5, and since a few drops is all you need, it will last a very long time!

Sunflower Oil

Here's a nice little tidbit... Another Oil to Consider when making some of the items that help make for more Healthy and Natural Lotions, Massage Oils or Facial Washes for instance, is:
Sunflower Oil (high oleic, Expeller pressed, Helianthus annuus): High oleic sunflower oil is very high in oleic (monounsaturated) acid and oil is usually defined as having a minimum 80 percent oleic acid. Sunflower oil has a light texture and is pleasant to use. It contains vitamins A, C, ...D, and E, a high linoleic acid content, and few saturated fatty acids. This oil is easily absorbed and can be used on all skin types. Its high vitamin E content makes it especially helpful for delicate and dry skin. It has a protective effect on the skin and is healing when applied to leg ulcers, bruises and skin diseases. Many soapmakers use sunflower oil as a less expensive alternative to olive oil. 1 pound $8, 2 pounds $13 and 4 pounds $23!

Dancing With "Spirit"

“Spirit and I have been dancing together for many years!
We have been doing the “jitterbug", and so many other Fast Dances I cannot count or name them all!
“Spirit” would, swing to the left, I would, swing to the right!
I would turn myself about and shake it all around.
Spirit would simlpy smile and wait for me to turn it back around.
Spirit would disappear and I would look behind the mirror.
It was only recently that I realized that “Spirit” was simply waiting,
waiting for me to ask for a “slow dance”!
Well I did just that the other day and, I have never let go!
To dance with “Spirit” Nice, and, Slow…
To hold tight, to feel “Spirit’s" heart beating next to mine, side by side as one.
To know that “Spirit" and I are now dancing as one!
That we are one, one of the all that is.
That we are dancing with the universe and you and….
Dancing The Night and, Eternity away!!!
Just You, “Spirit” and Me!!!

Keep the "System" Running Smooth

A Healthy Running System
Elimination is one of the most important functions of the body. In America, I believe, it is underrated. We feed our body, we fill our body, and, it also must come out of our body. If it does not, it becomes a toxin and we fell less than perfect. Our body begins to react and break down from the poisons.
Here are some things that can help get your system healthy and running again.
1. Eliminate white flour (and sugar). Remember how to make paper mache' from 1st grade (or home made glue)? It does the same thing within your intestines. Switch to WHOLE GRAINS; pastas, breads, tortillas, chips. These are all much more nutritious, natural and good for your “well running system”.
2. Other binding foods to avoid or limit: white rice, cheese, and toast.
3. Eat Oatmeal. Oatmeal has a natural mucilage quality that helps everything “slip” through your system. I’m not a fan of the soft mushy stuff; I like the texture of Steal Cut Oats. They take a little longer to prepare (10 Min), but I find them SO much tastier and enjoyable. I like them plain with a little salt; sometimes butter or a little coconut oil is a nice treat. Some people put flax oil or ground flax seed on top as well.
4. Add flax seed and oil to your diet. This is a very healthy oil and also helps things run properly. It’s best to use the whole seed and grind it fresh in a coffee grinder designated for seeds and herbs. Seeds can be added to salads, sauces and smoothies (drink right away as the seeds will swell and thicken the smoothie). Pre-ground is inferior as the oils go rancid quickly once the seed is broken. It is helpful to keep the seeds in the refrigerator or purchase in small amounts and use quickly. If all this is too much, at the very least you can buy the flax seed oil and add it to dressings, oatmeal, smoothies, etc…
5. Kombucha is a tea with healthy bacteria that aids in digestion. It can have a strong effect on some people, they need to start out with small amounts and build up. Others can start drinking a cup or more per day. See the post on Kombucha.
6. Add a refrigerated Pro biotic to your daily routine. Again, this is healthy bacteria that aides in digestion and supports the intestines.
7. Eat a fruit that has seeds in it first thing in the morning. Fruits with seeds can complete the entire life cycle, so they are highly nutritious and are digested quickly. Eating them first thing in the morning can help complete the bodies cleansing cycle.
8. Eliminate coffee. Coffee is oxidized, as is black tea. This dries out the colon and causes constipation, even though most people think it helps the process. Usually it is an incomplete bowel movement. Dandy blend is a great alternative that is caffeine free and actually nutritious and healthy for you. See our post on Dandy Blend.
For more information on Dandy Blend.
9. Licorice Tea aids in constipation and is quite tasty, even if you don’t like the black licorice candy. In it’s natural form, it has a gentle sweetness that people find surprisingly tasty. Again, this is a caffeine free beverage that is wonderful in the morning, but can also be delicious in the afternoon or before bed. See our post on Licorice.
10. Use natural products, laxatives can be addictive and keep the body from establishing the natural elimination process.

H1N1: New Information

With the Swine flu story growing as we head into the "season" of Colds and the Flu. And with the "fear factor" being elevated. "Out of Vaccine" reads some headlines.
We wanted again to bring some more information to you.

The only portals of entry for a Flu Virus are the nostrils and mouth/ throat. Clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population. Eucalyptus; Some of the properties of this Oil include, being an expectorant, an anti-infectious an anti-inflammatory aid. It helps reduce inflammation of the nasal mucus membranes as well. It would be a good Oil to put on the tip of the swab also, to help in bringing down the viral population. Drink as much of warm liquids as you can. Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm. The active component in kombucha tea is most likely glucaric acid. This compound, also known as D-glucaro-1,4 lactone, helps in the elimination of glucuronic acid conjugates that are produced by the liver. When glucuronic acid conjugates are disposed in the bowel during the elimination process, normal gut bacteria can break up these conjugates using an enzyme called beta-glucuronidase. Glucaric acid is an inhibitor of this bacterial enzyme, so the end result is that the glucuronic acid + waste is properly eliminated the first time, rather than being reabsorbed and detoxified over and over.
This information combined with what we have posted previously can help in reducing the threat of any colds that may get passed around. Not just this season, or even the "H1N1" virus in particular. But for any cold and flu season.
Staying calm and continuing good hygiene habits will combat the "Bugs" that are ever being promulgated as "fear factors"!
Stay Healthy, and Be Well!

Swine Flu and Essential Oils

It seems as though this "story" has not disappeared from our headlines. And with the advent of the "flu season" on the horizon, we thought it would be worth sharing the information again. Take a moment re-familiarize yourself with this useful information.
This is useful information for the "Swine Flu" as well as the "Flu" in general.

Swine Flu and Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils
The recent outbreak of swine flu is a concern that needs to be given attention.
A few details that should be considered.
1-Pigs are not bad.
2-Factory farming and over vaccination IS bad!
Some precautions that can be taken;
We need to use good, regular hygiene habits to help keep our immune system healthy. We need good eating habits. And most of all, we need to RELAX
Essential Oils are excellent at preventing infections. It is a fact that bacteria hides in fat tissue and anti-pharmacologicals cannot get into the fat tissue. Essential Oils are the only intervention that can get into the fat tissue.
There are several Oil blends you can use to assist you;
For a BODY RUB: Blend 3 teaspoons of organic oil and 2 drops of Essential Oil
For a BODY SPRAY: You can put 2 drops of each in an 8oz. squirt bottle with distilled water.

To help breakdown mucus and and bronchial infections, some Essential Oils to consider are:
Thyme; H
istorically it has been used in fighting infectious illnesses by the ancient Greeks and has also been used to fight respiratory problems.
Eucalyptus; Some of the properties of this Oil include, being an expectorant, an anti-infectious an anti-inflammatory aid. It helps reduce inflammation of the nasal mucus membranes as well.
Hyssop; Some of the constituents of this Oil include being anti-oxident, anti-viral and anti-infectious. As well as having astringent and decongestent properties.
Ravensare Aromatica; This Oil, besides having properties similar to those listed above also have antibiotic and antiviral functions.

A Morning "Fable"

A Children's Story : but not really . . .
by Gwyneth McNeil

"Your sky is bright!"
"I know," she said,
"It's the only way I know how to make it."
"And your moon is very, very soft."
"Well, that's because it's new yet, and young. Like you."
"Will you always be here?" I asked, hoping, but not daring speak the hope
for fear that words spoken would dash it all.
"Oh yes," she said, "at least, as long as you are. You care for me. When I am cared for, I live.
And when I live, you will always have a place to grow."
And then she smiled. And the air twinkled. But only I saw it. For this was a very private twinkling, as all " first twinkling’s " are.
And I relaxed, heaving a sigh deep into her holding.
And I slept, as she told me of ages past and all the wonderful nows and possible futures.
And sleeping, I awoke.
"Good morning," she said.
"Oh, it is! Oh yes, it really is!"
And I jumped, and I ran, and I breathed, and I shouted, and I sang!
She breathed, too.
She rested then, and made ready the ground for another's awakening.
Auh-Om, and Hallelujah !

The Hyphen ~

The Hyphen is described in the dictionary as: a punctuation mark (-) used at the end of a line when a word must be divided or, to link the parts of a compound word or phrase.
Use of the Hyphen has been used in many ways over the years to explain an idea or concept in an abridged form.
Be-ing for instance, is used to describe a "State of where you are, here and now", to "BE".
Or as in Dis-ease when describing an Ill-ness. Rather than a physical symptom, a mental state of be-ing ill at ease. If one were to look within they may find what it is they are not at ease with and upon finding the cause, an internal healing can begin and the lack of ease or the Dis-ease will naturally begin to subside.
If we were to begin to look at some of the many ways a Hyphen could be used it may help explain many of the other words we have used without it, there would be explanations of so many of the questions about our life!
The "One" that stood out above all to me, to cause me to put this in word rather than thought though was this...
To Re-Member: To once again become a "Member" of the "One" or of the "All". We All are individuals living out our lives as we desire. But we all are at the same time One with each other, part of the All that is!
If we were all to Re-Member ourselves to the greater community of "Spirit", we could begin a Healing around this planet on a scale never seen before in our Story!

You won't have to worry about chiggers or ticks (or Lyme Disease or Rocky Mountain Spotted Tick Fever). Sage or thyme would work too, but might irritate your skin so put it on your pant cuffs and shirt sleeves. As for your pets, you can put oils such as Purification, around their necks and backs, but watch to keep oils from around their eyes.

Perfumes; The Natural Way!

"Natures" Fragrances and Perfumes!
Here is some information and a few Blends for Perfumes you can wear without fear of harming Yourself, Others, or,
Our Home; This planet on which we live.
Essential Oils are given a "Note" if you will do describe their place on a "Fragrance Chart".
A Top note for instance, is a fragrance that is smelled first and fade
s first.
A Middle note is a fragrance that lasts as you would expect, a semi-extended period of time and is not usually a consideration in a blend.
A Base note then is the fragrance that lingers and lasts the longest in a blend.
You can wear a single oil, such as Bergamot, (Listed as one of our featured oils) Ylang Ylang or Lemongrass. Or mix some of your personal favorites together.
Free Livingston is an expert blender and can put something together "specific" to your likes or needs. Her clients call Her and request blends that bring forth the likes of "Confidence" for instance and She puts a blend together for just that purpose. It is a wonderful benefit that it smells good too!

Here are a few blends, if you wish. Be a little bold and try it yourself.

The first essential Oil blend She made was for a man that wanted more cl
arity in his situation at the time. He loved it and Free thought it was a great male scent. This is the blend She made for him, Labeled appropriately enough:
"Clarity"
Bay
Clary Sage
Cedarwood
Rosemary
Created for; Balance, energy, clarity, inspiration, uplift, strength and grounding.
A Basic Recipe:
10 drops Frankincense
5 drops Black Pepper
12 drops Rose
5 drops Jasmine
10 drops Cedar
3 drops RosewoodA Floral Perfume Recipe:
1 drop Ylang Ylang
1 drop Tangerine
2 drops Jasmine
2 drops Vanilla
3 drops Chamomile
1/4 oz Jojoba oil
Use a small dark glass vial to store your perfume oil, and be sure to keep the lid on tight. You can also add a few drops of vitamin E oil as an antioxidant to help preserve this oil based perfume blend.
Note: The oils highlighted in red denote the Base notes in each blend.

A few other Blends you may want to try:
Sensual Perfume for Women
5 drops coriander
6 drops bergamot
4 drops neroli
1 drop jasmine blend
3 drops rose blend
Place oil base in mixing container, add oils in the order listed and mix. Bottle, cap and leave one week before using.

Sensual eau de cologne for men
10 drops lavender
22 drops sandalwood
23 drops cedarwood
5 drops frankincense
100 ml alcohol/vodka
Place the alcohol/vodka mixture into your mixing bowl, add the oils in order given and mix well.

The above is "our" humble contribution to fragrance mixing the holistic way and is really basic. Your personal taste will determine what you like.

Licorice "The Herb, The Tea, and its Benefits"

Licorice: (Glycyrrhiza glabra ) is a flavorful herb that has been used in food and medicinal remedies for thousands of years. Also known as "sweet root," licorice root contains a compound that is roughly 50 times sweeter than sugar. Licorice root has been used in both Eastern and Western medicine to treat a variety of illnesses ranging from the common cold to liver disease. This herb has long been valued as a demulcent (soothing, coating agent) and expectorant (rids phlegm and mucous from the respiratory tract) and continues to be used by health care professionals today to relieve respiratory ailments (such as allergies, bronchitis, colds, sore throats, and tuberculosis), stomach problems (including heartburn from reflux), inflammatory disorders, skin diseases, stress relief, as a laxative, and liver problems.
Emerging studies are beginning to suggest that licorice may also play a role in the treatment of heart disease. In one recent study, people with high cholesterol experienced a significant reduction in total cholesterol, LDL ("bad") cholesterol, and triglyceride levels after taking licorice root extracts for 1 month. The extract also reduced systolic blood pressure by 10%, although licorice may increase blood pressure in some individuals. These measures returned to their previous, elevated levels when the participants stopped taking the licorice supplements. Licorice root extract has also been shown to reduce the risk of atherosclerosis "hardening of the arteries".
Preliminary studies also suggest that licorice may play a role in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). One early study of only 3 people with HIV suggested that intravenous glycyrrhizin may prevent replication of HIV, but larger studies have yet to duplicate these findings.
Another recent study found that a preparation of licorice may reduce body fat. Fifteen normal-weight subjects consumed licorice for 2 months (3.5 g a day). Body fat mass was measured before and after treatment. Licorice was able to reduce body fat mass and to suppress the hormone aldosterone. Another study found that a topical preparation of glycyrrhetinic acid (a component of licorice) was able to reduce the thickness of fat on the thigh in human subjects.
Licorice can be taken in the following forms:
·Dried root: 1 - 5 g as an infusion or decoction (boiled), three times daily
·Licorice 1:5 tincture: 2-5 ml, three times daily
·Standardized extract: 250-500 mg, three times daily, standardized to contain 20% glycyrrhizinic acid
·DGL extract: 0.4 - 1.6 g, three times daily, for peptic ulcer
·DGL extract 4:1: chew 300 - 400 mg, three times daily 20 minutes before meals, for peptic ulcer
Precautions:
The use of herbs is a time-honored approach to strengthening the body and treating disease. Herbs, however, contain components that can trigger side effects and that can interact with other herbs, supplements, or medications. For these reasons, herbs should be taken with care, preferably under the supervision of a health care provider in the field of botanical medicine.

The Dangers of Coffee and Caffeine

The health problems which caffeine can cause could fill an entire library. Not to mention enough popular journals and medical reports to paper the White House... Inside And Out!
Problems associated with with this "Drug" include accelerated aging, a weakening of the immune system, impairing digestion, and causing blood sugar fluctuations which contribute to weight gain, and mood disorders!
There are more than 208 acids in coffee that contribute to indigestion and acid imbalance. This results in the buildup of toxic waste, cardiovascular disease, auto immune disorders, arthritis, and rheumatism. Uric acid produced by the breakdown of caffeine can cause kidney stones and gout, and can aggravate prostate conditions.
Caffeine and the acids in coffee also inhibit absorption of B vitamins and cause urinary excretion of calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron and trace minerals - all of which are essential for good health.

Women that drink coffee are more subject to osteoporosis and anemia, that lead to both fatigue and illness. And this is just scratching the surface of associated dangers to coffee!

That's CAFFEINE folks! Whether it be in coffee, cola, or any other beverage for that matter. It's hardly something you would want to be pouring into your body by the multiple cup or bottlefuls each day, is it?
